In the last three years we have committed almost £10 million directly to research into childhood leukaemia, including the development of research facilities.
We fund research in three areas:
One of the greatest medical success stories of the last century is the amazing growth in the survival rate for childhood leukaemia.
But leukaemia still claims the lives of 1 in 5 children diagnosed in the UK. And those who survive may be left with serious, long-lasting side-effects as a result of the intensive treatments used to save their young lives.
We are working to develop treatments which are not only more effective, driving up the survival rate, but which are less punishing, reducing the risk of the side-effects associated with current treatments.More about our work to develop improved treatments
Little is currently known about what causes children to develop leukaemia but incidence of the disease increased throughout the twentieth century, suggesting that aspects of our changing lifestyle may play a role.
We are working hard to improve our understanding of the causes of childhood leukaemia, towards the day when we will be able to take informed, preventive action.
An improved understanding of the causes of the disease may also help in the development of improved treatments.Research into causes and prevention
By providing capital funding for the improvement of research facilities, we help scientists make the best possible progress in their work.Funding of research facilities
As well as directly funding research, we have a key role in disseminating the results so that information is shared by researchers around the world.Making sure the results of research are shared
